Maria Aceli - Writer, Artistic leader and Artist

Maria Aceli is a Stockholm based writer, artistic leader and artist who is a former modern jazzdancer trained in Canada and USA. After the homecoming in Stockholm 1999 she has completed a Bachelor of Arts with comparative literature and dramatic acting as the main field of study.

Maria founded Cabaret Verboten in 2006 at Herräng Dance Camp, an underground and forbidden cabaret saloon taking place at odd and obscure places. Many of today's big burlesk artists made their debut in this cabaret, whose style and signum is naked, direct, improvised and raw. Role models go back to Paris and Berlin in the roaring 20's and 30's, but as the artistic leader and writer of the venue, Maria also tries to work with themes that are both fiery current and dared. 

Maria is a poet and is currently working on her first novel dealing with bipolar disorder, a confession book in where she explores the intimate relationship in between the manic state and the artistic expression. Extracts from her literary production are soon to be published on this website.

Maria is also a singer in jazz, cabaret and chansons. She has recently founded the jazztrio Midnight District together with  Markus Wikström on contrabass and Erik Fridell on the accordeon. They perform midnightblue jazz classics and romantic Billie Holiday songs with a tender and heartbreaking echo and touch. Samples are soon to be uploaded on this website.
